Summary: Microsoft does not give consumers the ability to capture screenshots in Windows Phone, but now you can easily unlock your device for development purposes.

I purchased my HD7 and Dell Venue Pro last year and when given the chance I updated the OS as early as possible while also installing 32GB microSD cards in both devices. Thus, I was interested in trying out the ChevronWP7 experience where I could unlock my device and side load apps.

The developers on the ChevronWP7 team worked with Microsoft to release a valuable tool that has little risk of damaging your device. You can now visit the ChevronWP7 Labs page and then pay $9 for each device token to unlock your devices. I unlocked my Dell Venue Pro yesterday, primarily so I could finally use a screen capture tool to take review screenshots.

Dell inspiron 1525 power laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only £ 36.65

HP probook 4310s laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only $ 60.99

You will need to use a Windows computer and have the free WP7 SDK loaded to use the ChevronWP7 unlock utility. After you unlock your device you can develop and test apps or find ones that others have created, such as:

Screen Capture v3 – Take screenshots from your Windows Phone 7 to share a funny SMS or illustrate an app on a blog post

Webserver (Mango) – Why wouldn’t you run a web server on your phone? (be sure to download the “no-interop” version)

Folders for Windows Phone Mango – Organize apps and settings into folders on the Start screen

Mango Battery Status – Check your phone’s Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Laptop Computer Battery stat in a Live Tile and graph your battery usage.

Have any other readers tried out ChevronWP7? If so, do you have any other apps or utilities to recommend to me and the readers?

“Microsoft has created a mobile demo site to promote Windows Phone’s features to consumers.”

Still tempted by the fruit of another? If you’re looking Microsoft’s way, but aren’t quite ready to toss your adoration for iOS or Android aside, the coders in Redmond are giving you an alternative to quitting cold turkey.

Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Batteries
Li-ion, 4400 mAh, 10.8 V
Only $ 46.88

HP probook 4310s laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only $ 60.99

Dell latitude d531 power laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only $ 45.02

Microsoft has created a HTML5 demo of the Windows Phone operating system that works on iOS’ Mobile Safari browser and Android’s mobile browser. The web demo is a pretty simple way for iPhone and Android users to get a feel for the Metro UI using their existing hardware. It is not as full featured as handing them your Windows Phone but it is a fun way to show off the Windows Phone experience. To try it, point the mobile browser to http://aka.ms/wpdemo, you’ll be immediately tunneled into a emulation of Windows Phone 7. We gave it a test run here at Engadget HQ, and it seems that every tile and swipe save for Apps runs properly. Can’t say the fonts and such looked as smooth on our Galaxy S II as they do on the Radar, but it’s a solid effort that’ll definitely serve you well if you’re considering the switch. Just don’t try to flip the demo horizontally — that’s clearly a no-no.

With the latest iteration of its ID47 notebook, Gateway kept everything we liked about the previous version–an aluminum alloy chassis, an utra-thin bezel, and USB 3.0–and bumped the specs. You now get a faster processor and Intel’s Wireless Display technology but at the same reasonable price of $699. Is this the 14-inch system for you?

Design

Click to EnlargeSporting a brushed aluminum-alloy lid and deck, metallic-colored keys, and a slick dark blue-tinted touchpad, the Gateway ID47H07u oozes style. Even the matte-black bottom and sides have a smooth surface, with a minimum of extraneous holes and grooves. The 0.2-inch black bezel surrounding the screen not only fits a 14-inch display in the same space normally reserved for a 13-inch panel, but it also adds a unique design flair.

Thanks to its thin bezel, the 13 x 9 x 1.1-inch Gateway ID47H07u is about half an inch shorter than many other 14-inch notebooks, such as the Dell Inspiron 14z (13.6 x 9.7 x 0.9 inches) and the 13.4 x 9.2 x 1.2-inch Lenovo IdeaPad V470. At 4.4 pounds, the ID47H07u is a hair lighter than the Inspiron 14z and the V470, both of which weigh 4.6 pounds. The HP Pavilion dm4t is a little thicker, but it has the same weight and depth, at 13.4 x 9 x 1.3 inches and 4.4 pounds.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Click to EnlargeThe island-style keyboard on the ID47 provided reasonable tactile feedback, good key placement, and a comfortable deck. However, the keyboard did show a small amount of flex, particularly when we pressed down on the G and H keys. We do appreciate that the function keys are reversed so you can adjust the brightness and activate media controls without using combos.

The fairly large 3.9 x 2.3-inch Synaptics ClickPad has a slick, glossy surface with a unique blue color. Navigating the desktop wasn’t difficult, but the touchpad picks up fingerprints easily and creates a little more friction that we’d prefer. Multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom worked, but weren’t as smooth as we would like. Those who use the touchpad with two fingers will experience some jerkiness. You can also scroll with two fingers and use a four-finger swipe down to show the desktop at any time.

Heat

The Gateway ID47H07u stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video for 15 minutes at full screen, we measured the touchpad at 82 degrees, the keyboard at 80 degrees, and the bottom at a chilly 81 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees comfortable.

Display and Audio

Click to EnlargeThe Gateway ID47H07u’s 14.1-inch, 1366 x 768 glossy screen provided sharp, rich images. When we tried watching both a 1080p QuickTime trailer forImmortals and a 1080p YouTube trailer for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, images were crisp and motion was smooth, but colors inverted at even 45 degree angles. Dark areas also showed a high amount of backlight bleed.

Using an AEMC lightmeter, we measured the brightness of the screen, which averaged 153 lux. That’s better than the Lenovo V470 (144 lux), but not as good as the Inspiron 14z (194 lux).

The stereo speakers, located on the bottom of the Gateway ID47H07u, provided accurate audio that was loud enough to fill a room. When we streamed it from Pandora, Maroon 5′s “Wake Up Call” was rich and clear without any distortion. We could really hear the twang of Eric Clapton’s guitar strums in “Lay Down Sally,” and there was nice separation of instruments, too. The Dolby Home Theater v.4 software makes a huge difference, as all songs were flat when we toggled the application off.

Wireless Display

Click to EnlargeBuilt in to the ID47 now is Intel’s Wireless Display technology, which lets users stream content wirelessly from the notebook to a larger display, provided you have a receiver such as the $99 Netgear Push2TV HDTV adapter. Unfortunately, you will have to purchase this separately.

Ports and Webcam

Click to EnlargeThe Gateway ID47H07u has a generous selection of ports, including one USB 3.0 connector that allows you to connect high-speed external hard drives and docking stations. The right side of the laptop houses an Ethernet port, a Kensington Lock slot, and that speedy USB 3.0 port. A VGA port, HDMI, audio in/out, and two more USB ports line the left side. The front lip sports a 5-in-1 card reader.

The 720p webcam provided sharp and colorful images when used near a light source, but it suffered from a lot of visual noise when we used the cam in a dark area of our living room. When we were talking on Skype in a dim area with a light source behind us, fine details of our face were visible, though shadowed.

Performance

With its 2.4-GHz Core i5-2430M CPU, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, and a 5,400-rpm, 500GB hard drive, the Gateway ID47H07u provides strong performance that’s good enough for demanding tasks.

On PCMark07, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance, the ID47H07u scored a strong 2,342, slightly above the 2,171 thin-and-light notebook category average (and the same score as the older ID47). The new ID47 was also predictably faster than the Core i3-powered HP Pavilion dm4t (1,869) and the IdeaPad V470 (1,821). However, the Dell Inspiron 14z we tested with a 2.3-GHz Core i5 CPU notched a higher 2,562.

The 500GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive booted into Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) in 1 minute and 4 seconds, almost dead even with the 65-second category average. The drive took a 2 minutes and 58 seconds to complete the LAPTOP File Transfer Test, which involves copying 4.97GB of mixed-media files. That’s a rate of 28.6 MBps, a little above the 26 MBps category average and the 24 MBps provided by the HP Pavilion dm4t. However, the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s’ 7,200-rpm drive notched a speed of 31.6 MBps.

Gateway squ-413 laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only £ 39.31

Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop Battery
only £ 38.88

Dell xps m1530 power battery brand new 4400mAh Only $ 45.02

On the OpenOffice Spreadsheet test, the ID47H07u took 5 minutes and 27 seconds to match 20,000 names to their corresponding addresses, which is 1 second faster than the Inspiron 14z (5:28), about 40 seconds faster than the category average (6:10), and much faster than the V470, which took 7:51.

Graphics Performance

Don’t expect to do any serious 3D gaming with the Gateway ID47H07u’s integrated Intel HD 3000 chip. On 3DMark06, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall graphics prowess, the notebook scored a modest 4,176. That’s slightly below the category average (4,370) and well behind the Dell Inspiron 14z (4,579). Still, the Gateway was better than the HP dm4t’s score of 3,466.

On autodetect settings, the ID47H07u managed 36 frames per second in World of Warcraft, which is playable but half the 74 fps category average. However, when we turned the settings up to maximum, that rate dropped to an unplayable 13 fps, half the 29 fps category average.

Battery Life Test

Click to EnlargeThe Gateway ID47H07u packs enough juice to last just about all day. On the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi, the ID47H07u lasted a strong 7 hours and 48 minutes, 40 minutes longer than the ID47H02u Gateway squ-412 battery, and more than 2 hours longer than the thin-and-light notebook category average of 5:32. The Pavilion dm4t managed a time of 7:02, while the Inspiron 14z lasted 6:18, and the V470 lasted 4:56.

Configurations

Our review configuration, the ID47H07u, costs $699. For that price, you get the 2.3-GHz Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. For $629, you can get the ID47H06u, which has a 2.2-GHz Core i3-2330M CPU, a 500GB hard drive, and 4GB of RAM.

Software

Click to EnlargeGateway bundles the ID47H07u with a standard array of utilities, including Acer Video Web Camera for capturing stills and video, Gateway Recovery management for creating a restore disc, and Gateway MyBackup for backing up files and even imaging the whole system. Gateway Games is a portal that lets you purchase and download a wide variety of free and paid casual games.

A Social Networks app launches automatically when you hit the social networking button that sits to the right of the backspace key. The app shows the latest updates from your FaceBook, Flickr, and YouTube feeds and allows you to post Facebook updates. We like that you can add your favorite contacts on the Friends tab in this software, and that there’s a separate tab just for photos. However, there’s no support for Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, or other popular social networks.

Other apps include Barnes & Noble’s Nook for PC, Aupeo (a Pandora-like music app), and Nero Multimedia Suite 10 Essentials.

Question: Should I Remove the Laptop Battery For A Desktop Replacement Laptop?

I have a laptop at home which I use as a desktop replacement. As such, 99% of the time the laptop is being used it is plugged in. I wonder if I should remove the battery so that it is not permanently being charged, or does the laptop cut off the current to the battery once it is fully charged? I do unplug the laptop when I turn it off.

Answer:

When using a laptop as a desktop replacement the battery should not be left in for long periods of time. The laptop will over time discharge the battery. Remove the Dell laptop battery – making sure that it is charged to 40% and store it in a dry, warm place. Ensure that it is wrapped protectively and nothing will be dropped on it.

The IBM thinkpad battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge. Leaving a battery in storage for longer than this without using could cause the battery to fully discharge as the circuitry of the battery itself consumes power.

Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.

www.batteryfast.com have the largest range of Dell Laptop Batteries and Toshiba Laptop Batteries in USA. Carry HP Laptop Batteries, Asus Laptop Batteries and HP Laptop AC Adapters for over 20,000 different laptops. All our laptop batteries and laptop power adapters are Brand New, Manufacturer Warranty and Customer Service Commitment!

Remember that when you have removed the battery from a laptop while using with an electrical outlet – the automatic battery backup is no longer functional. Make sure to plug your laptop into an uninterrupted power source (UPS) not directly into an outlet or surge protector.

10 Laptop Battery Basics

Take care of your Sony laptop battery and ensure that it will be ready to work properly when you need it most. Some general tips for laptop care include: avoid extreme temperatures, don’t leave a laptop outside in cold weather or leave it in a hot car. Cold batteries can’t create very much power and hot batteries will discharge very quickly. Use electrical power when available to keep battery charged. Don’t let your laptop go for long periods of time without using the battery.

1. Smaller Is Better Consider an ultraportable or thin-and-light rather than a desktop replacement laptop. Smaller displays use less power. Going with a hard drive that runs at 4200rpm uses less power than a hard drive running at 5400rpm.

2. Power Control Use as little power as possible by adjusting laptop settings. Use the Power Options to set to the laptop to go inactive after a set amount of time. Set adjustments so that the display goes off first, then hard the hard drive stay active a bit longer and store the system content’s to the RAM.

3. Turn Down the Lights Adjust the display brightness to a lower setting, make sure you can view the screen without squinting. You can also adjust the brightness of the display to suit the conditions you are working in.

4. Watch Your Battery Use Keep an eye on your HP Pavilion DV6 Power Laptop Battery consumption and know how much power you have remaining. Use the battery power icon on the system tray or you can purchase batteries which have LED gauges on the outside of the battery itself.

5. Charging It Up Whenever you have access to a power source, charge the battery. Before you leave on any trips, fully charge the batteries, especially if you don’t know where or when you might have access to any electrical outlets.

6. Get Another Battery Some laptops are capable of running with two batteries. If you cannot run two batteries, check with the manufacturer to see if there are high capacity batteries available. External batteries can also be used to extend operating time.

7. Drain the Battery The first time you use your laptop with battery power, allow the laptop battery to completely discharge. Do this at least twice and don’t try to charge the battery when it is half discharged.

Dell inspiron 1525 power laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only £ 36.65

HP probook 4310s laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only $ 60.99

8. Clean Batteries Keep the battery and its connections clean and free of debris. Clean your battery terminals on a regular basis using a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on the tip.

9. CMOS Battery Check-Up The backup battery is a CMOS battery which is a secondary battery to power the clock and can drain a main battery if it is dead. Check with your User Manual or manufacturer’s web site for the location of the CMOS battery and where to get a replacement.

10. Turning It Off Don’t run programs or devices that you aren’t using. Remove PC cards and turn off Wi-Fi software. Using your laptop to watch movies or play games will drain the battery quickly as well.

A new approach to alkali batteries, in which the cathode is dissolved in water that flows through the system, could [...]

A new approach to alkali batteries, in which the cathode is dissolved in water that flows through the system, could overcome the limitations of currently available batteries, scientists in the US say. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have revolutionised the mobility of small electronics, but their limited capacity means they don’t stretch easily to bigger jobs such as running automobiles or storing power for national grid networks.

Ordinarily, lithium ion batteries contain a solid anode, which gives up electrons, and a solid cathode, which receives them. The two are divided by an organic fluid electrolyte. This strategy depends on a cathode that can expand to host additional lithium ions from the anode during discharge and contract to release them during charging. The solid’s limited ability to change its volume caps the battery’s capacity, and the expansion and contraction is also a source of wear.

Aqueous cathodes in ‘flow through’ batteries are not a new idea, but Yuhao Lu, John Goodenough, and Youngsik Kim at the University of Texas in Austin, US, are the first to suggest them as the next phase of lithium-ion technology. Their design places a solid alkali ion electrolyte between a lithium or sodium anode and an aqueous cathode comprising a metal – in this case iron – in two oxidation states. The cathode solution flows through the system from an attached storage tank, so its total capacity can be much greater than that of a solid. Moreover, because the cathode is a liquid, it avoids the volume changes as lithium shuttles in and out.

To test the idea, the team used a commercial electrolyte called lithium superionic conductor (Lisicon) with a solid lithium anode. An iron cyanide cathode met many of the requirements for a successful HP 485041-003 laptop battery: it’s chemically stable, it’s soluble in water and its high potential of 3.4V with lithium means it is on par with commercially available lithium-ion alternatives.

HP Pavilion DV6 Laptop Extended Battery

The electrolyte restricted their initial experiments to a proof of concept only, says Goodenough. But a thinner, more stable lithium ion solid electrolyte is already under development in his laboratory.

Rob Armstrong of the University of St Andrews in the UK describes the work as ‘highly significant’. Although the solid electrolyte requires improvement, he says, ‘the suitability for both static energy storage associated with renewable energy generation, and for electric vehicles, means that this represents a very promising avenue for future research, alongside lithium-air and lithium-sulfur batteries’.

Google Chrome, probably Google’s most widely used desktop application, for the first time has become the world’s second most used browser on monthly basis overtaking Firefox. According to web analytics company StatCounter, 25.69% of internet users have accessed the web through Chrome during November 2011, while 40.63% used Internet Explorer (IE) and 25.23% used Firefox.

StatCounter’s CEO, Aodhan Cullen, has clarified about the analysis stating, “Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the web also.” The stats are based on aggregate data collected on a sample exceeding 15 billion page views per month (4 billion from the US) from the StatCounter network of more than three million websites.

Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop Battery

HP 484170-001 extended laptop battery

brand new 4400mAh Only £ 36.66

Although, some people can disagree with these statistics, StatCounter Global Stats shows a negative trend for both IE and Firefox. And, it can be assumed that Google Chrome may outrun IE to become the world’s most used web browser.

Surprisingly, it seems that users have selected Chrome as their preferred browser because of its speed and other features over its privacy issues. For Firefox, it seems that they need to work on their issues like high memory usage and fast responsiveness, if they want to remain competitive.

Your iPad comes with a large lithium-ion battery, and Apple claims the iPad Battery gives you up to 10 hours of continuous usage and hold a charge in standby mode for 30 days. Those are impressive times, although count on getting less in the real world.

The biggest down side to the iPad battery is that it’s not, in Apple parlance, a user-installable feature. If your battery dies, you have no choice but to return it to Apple to get it replaced. Which is all the more reason to take care of your battery and try to maximize battery life.

Tracking iPad Battery Use

Your iPad doesn’t give much battery data, but you can monitor both the total usage time (this includes all activities: surfing, reading eBooks, gaming, playing media, and so on) and standby time (time when your iPad was in Sleep mode).

On the Home screen, tap Settings. The Settings screen appears.

Tap General. Your iPad displays the General screen.

Tap the Acer aspire 4710 battery Percentage On/Off switch to the On position. Your iPad shows you the percentage of iPad battery life left in the status bar beside the battery icon.

When working with a laptop computer its battery can get in trouble at times. There are many common laptop battery [...]

When working with a laptop computer its battery can get in trouble at times. There are many common laptop battery problems that some laptops have to deal with Dell xps m1330 battery. Here are some of these problems to watch for and how they can be corrected.

Memory effect is a concern that works with many rechargeable laptop batteries. Due to memory effect a laptop battery can lose its capacity for power. This is due to the battery not remembering what is capacity level is. When the battery is recharged before running out the battery will forget about unused space. This causes the battery to run out of power at a quick rate .

Completely draining the battery inside the laptop can be done to fix memory effect. Draining the battery involves using up the entire power of the Acer aspire 5520 laptop battery. After this is done the battery can be recharged to its full level. It will know what its capacity is again and it can work to its best extent . For the best results this should be done once each month.

Next there is the case of overheating. Overheating can cause permanent battery damage and faster power loss. When overheating occurs the battery will need to be taken out of the laptop. If the battery does not cool off and it still overheats the battery will have to be replaced HP pavilion dv9000 battery.

Sometimes a battery will not be read by a laptop due to discharging outside the laptop. This can create energy loss in the battery. Discharging of the battery from out of the laptop can cause the battery to lose its memory. When this happens the laptop the battery normally works with will not accept that battery.

This discharging problem can be fixed when the battery is stored properly. Discharging should only occur with the battery through its computer. Discharging from out of the computer should be stopped before the discharging is complete. This is so that the Dell inspiron 9400 battery will still have its memory and energy.

These are all laptop battery concerns that any laptop computer user should be aware of. Overheating, discharging away from a computer and memory effect are important problems. They can cause a battery to not work properly. They can all be handled when the right actions are taken for the battery link.

Lenovo has finally dropped into the tablets market after a long line of rumors and waiting from fans, with the LePad A1 consumer [...]

Lenovo has finally dropped into the tablets market after a long line of rumors and waiting from fans, with the LePad A1 consumer slate selling pretty well in China (it’s not available worldwide, sadly, but it’s successor will be) and the ThinkPad Tablet gaining traction in the business sector, thanks to the inclusion of such irreplaceable features as encryption, an advanced digitizer and a great build quality that should last for years to come.

And just this week, they’ve also outed their next line of smartphones and tablets, and while the LePhones are pretty good, the latter niche is getting the arguably more interesting LePad S2005, LePad S2007 and S2010 tablets, which look nice and have some pretty interesting internal hardware, as well.

As you may be able to tell from their name, the S2007 (S200 probably means 2nd generation) has a 7 inch screen, while the S2010 features a bigger 10 inch display, although the resolution on both is the same -1280×800 pixels, which makes the 7 incher look slightly better. Both displays use the IPS technology, so the viewing angles, color reproduction and contrast levels are all on a pretty high level, with the brightness of the LED backlight being more than enough for any tasks. The LePad S2005 has a 5 inch, 800×480 pixels LTPS display, which is pretty good, but it’s more visibly pixelated than the other two models because of the low DPI.

On the inside, the S2007 and S2010 tablets are also pretty much the same – both of them use Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual core processor, with the Adreno 220 graphics adapter and 1 GB of RAM - this practically guarantees that the performance will be high enough for even the most resource intensive apps and/or heavy multitasking (especially useful with the upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update). The S2005 is slightly slower, using a 1.2 GHz chip, but the amount of RAM and graphics adapter are the same as its bigger brothers, so the performance hit is not as big as it could’ve been.

HP Elitebook 8530w Extended Life Battery Li-ion, 4400 mAh, 10.8 V Only $ 60.66

HP 485041-003 laptop battery brand new 4400mAh Only £ 36.66

Compaq 484170-001 extended life battery brand new 4400mAh Only £ 36.66

Other specs include an 8 megapixels camera on the back of the 7 and 10 inchers and a 5 megapixels shooter on the back of the 5 inch tablet/smartphone hybrid, as well as a HSPA+ modem, Wifi N, Bluetooth 3.0, micro USB and micro HDMI out ports and a 1.3 megapixels camera on all three devices. Not bad, but the S2005 is especially impressive, as it’s pretty much just as powerful as the bigger tablets, while being almost pocketable - at 198 grams and 9.95mm thickness, it’s lighter and just as slim as the Dell Streak.

The S2007 is 360 grams heavy and 9.7mm thick, and is rated for up to 8 hours of battery life with its 3780 mAh unit, while the S2010 weighs 670 grams (pretty heavy I have to say), is 9.9mm thick and can last up to 11 hours of continuous use thanks to its big 7560 mAh HP Probook 4710S Laptop Battery.

The S2007 and S2010 will be shipping with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, while the S2005 will be running the smartphone-oriented Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, but I have no doubt all three of them will get an Ice Cream Sandwich update when it becomes available.

Lenovo is definitely ramping up, and with these three tablets, they’ve demonstrated that they are able to compete on the new market. All three devices will be released in China in the following weeks, and will be coming worldwide in a few months – I can’t wait to see the pricing.
