So what gadgets are you going to pack for your trip? You’ve got two obvious options. The first is to take a whole bag full of electronics, including your laptop, ebook reader, camera, video camera, music player, handheld video game device, electronic translator, and of course a cell phone.

The other option is to scrap all of that and simply take a smartphone, which can do all of the above fairly well — and when space and weight are at a premium, “fairly well” is good enough. Sometimes, though, even the seemingly all-powerful smartphone isn’t quite smart enough, and you find yourself wishing for something a little bigger, easier to type on, or simply able to do more stuff.

So the question remains: Should your laptop or tablet find its way into your bag? It all depends on what you want to do.

Lugging your laptop
If you do a lot of multitasking, working on several things at once, then a laptop is the way to go. Certain programs — web development tools, a decent word processor, most big-name games, or anything requiring a lot of power (or simply a keyboard and mouse) — simply won’t run on a tablet. We’re not sure how much work you plan on doing on your trip, but this is something to keep in mind.

While size isn’t everything, screen real estate can make or break your gadget decision. If a smartphone seems too small, a tablet screen might not be big enough for your needs, either. Especially when traveling for business, you might require something with a larger resolution to fit all of your palettes, toolbars, or active documents on the screen.

The element of familiarity means that for many people, bringing a laptop simply makes more sense. If you’re used to using a mouse or touchpad, then switching to a touchscreen can be an inconvenient learning curve. On your way to an important client site is not the time to be learning the ins and outs of a multi-touch interface, for instance.

Toting your tablet
These days, tablets are bucking the popular trend where power equates to price. You can grab quite a powerful little machine for $500 or so, and it will do almost anything you ask. You can get simple word processors for your tablet (most are bare-bones but will get the words out of your head and onto a document) and even surprisingly sophisticated photo editing software.

Portability is the main draw of a tablet. You can slip one easily into a decent-sized bag — no need for a dedicated satchel — and take it out whenever you feel the need. It can be awkward trying to type something on a laptop in an airplane seat, but your Galaxy Tab will fit neatly on the fold-down table in front of you, giving you a little extra time to get that important task done before arriving at your destination.

When traveling domestically with a 3G model tablet, you won’t even need to hunt for wifi. You have the internet in your hand as soon as it wakes from sleep mode, ready to download your email or upload that status update. No more driving slowly past buildings trying to find someone with an unsecured wifi network!

And if you really find yourself needing something with a little more oomph, you can always head to an internet cafe or hotel business center.

Power vs. portability
A simple, one-size-fits-all solution would be great, but unfortunately, there simply isn’t one. Both laptops and tablets have their perks, and both have their downsides. It mainly comes down to power vs. portability and the emphasis you place on those two factors. Unless your work is highly confidential or you’re pressed for packing space, you could always compromise and take both.

Just make sure you prioritize your luggage weight. Leaving your laptop at home but then taking your iPad, Kindle, and 3DS might not be the best use of your weight allowance. Many of those tasks can be condensed into one device, leaving you more room in your suitcase for souvenirs!
